What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a restorative dentistry procedure used to support tooth replacements. The dental implant itself essentially replaces the missing tooth root. The implant resembles a screw and is surgically placed inside the jawbone. After placing the implant the bone begins to fuse around the implant, allowing the implant to secure itself just like a tooth. Connected to the dental implant is the abutment which is a connector piece that attaches the implant to the tooth replacement. We can attach the implant to a dental crown for a single tooth replacement, dental bridge, or even dentures. Dental implants can replace one or an entire arch of teeth. Dr. Mantovani will let you know how many implants you need to accomplish your goals.

The first step is finding out if you’re a good candidate. Dr. Mantovani will determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants during your consultation. During this time, he will also outline your procedure and let you know how many implants you need, how much the procedure will cost, and help you choose the best tooth replacement. We can also provide dental implant consultations for patients who need to have teeth extracted too.

After we clear you for the procedure, you will schedule a separate appointment for the surgery. If you experience any dental anxiety at all, we might recommend sedation dentistry to help you stay relaxed during the procedure. We will also administer local anesthetic to numb up the area so you don’t feel a thing. Once you’re numb, Dr. Mantovani will place the metal post in your jaw and then seal the incision.

Over the next few months, the jaw will fuse to the post to create the perfect foundation for a tooth replacement. Once your jaw heals enough, we will attach the abutment to the dental implant and take impressions of your mouth. We will send the impressions off to the dental lab to construct your replacement teeth. Once they return, we will attach them to the abutment and your new smile is complete.

Benefits

When you opt for dental implants over other tooth replacement options, you’re practically replacing your tooth with the closest thing next to a real tooth. With this treatment, you gain access to lots of amazing benefits including the following.

Feels Natural – Chewing, speaking, and biting with dental implants feels just like having natural teeth!

Prevents Bone Loss – After you lose a tooth, your jaw realizes that it doesn’t need the bone anymore because it has nothing to hold. Replacing your missing teeth with dental implants prevents bone loss from occurring in the first place.

Enhances Appearance – Since dental implants help maintain your jaw bone, you won’t experience loss of facial structure that often leads to sagging skin, excess wrinkles, and a sunken-in look. Instead, you will maintain your usual youthful appearance.

Improves Confidence – Patients who previously lived with missing teeth or a replacement they were unhappy with will experience a brand new wave of self-confidence. Dental implants both feel great and look great! Never feel self-conscious about your smile again.

Can Last a Lifetime – With proper care, dental implants can last you for the rest of your life.

Can Help Prevent Gum Disease – When you have missing teeth, the empty holes act as traps for bacteria that can cause gum disease. When you replace your missing teeth and fill in these gaps, you can better prevent gum disease.
