What to Expect at Your Dental Cleaning and Exam

The order of events may vary due to certain circumstances, but most of our new patients will undergo a comprehensive dental cleaning and exam. Then, when you are given a clean bill of dental health, you will schedule your next visit in approximately six months.

Professional dental cleaning is nothing like what you can accomplish at home. Brushing and flossing at home effectively removes plaque and bacteria from the mouth, but brushing and flossing at home is simply not enough to ensure an excellent long life for your pearly whites and beautiful pink gums.

If your “pearly whites” are not nearly as pearly as they should be, Dr. Escoto, Dr. Mantovani, and their team will offer some treatment options that will turn your lackluster smile into the dazzler you’ve always wanted. Our general dentists are also cosmetic dentists who perform several procedures to fix minor flaws in your teeth that detract from the aesthetics of your smile.

Removing Plaque is Crucial to Your Dental Cleaning

Once plaque sits for a certain period, it can harden into tartar, which only a Miami Beach general dentist like Dr. Escoto and her hygienists can remove using special instruments. When tartar is not removed, cavities and gum disease can develop. Early gum disease, known as gingivitis, is easily treatable, while untreated gum disease will progress into the more challenging-to-treat periodontal disease.

When you visit our Miami Beach dental office for your dental cleaning, our dental hygienist will use a dental scraper or ultrasonic tool to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. We will then floss to remove any remaining plaque and debris. We will then polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave you with smooth, clean-feeling teeth and gums.

Dr. Escoto or Dr. Mantovani will finish your dental cleaning by using a particular dental instrument to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line.

We encourage our patients to visit us every six months for a dental cleaning, but we might recommend more frequent visits for patients who experience a higher buildup of plaque and tartar.

Dental Exams

After you receive a dental cleaning, you will also have a dental exam. We typically take X-rays only once yearly unless any problems arise that need to be addressed. X-rays allow us to see your tooth’s structure to look for cavities, impacted teeth, infections, cracked teeth, and other dental problems that must be fixed.

In addition to taking X-rays, Dr. Escoto or Dr. Mantovani will also complete a physical inspection of your mouth. They will look at your gums to check for gum disease symptoms such as inflamed, receding, or bleeding gums, odd sores in the mouth, or any other anomalies.

Oral cancer screening is integral to your dental exam; when caught early, oral cancer is treatable. Even young people can develop mouth cancer, so seeing your Miami Beach general dentist at least twice each year is imperative. Please don’t think that oral cancer affects only older adults.

Our dental exams allow us to achieve that ounce of prevention to avoid the pound of cure. Advanced dental treatments can be costly, and sometimes dental insurance does not cover procedures necessary to save your teeth or gums. We simply cannot emphasize enough the importance of making your appointments for twice-yearly dental cleanings and exams at SoBe Dentist™.
