What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry simply means we administer medications in some form to help our patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental procedures. Also known as “sleep dentistry,” sedation dentistry often causes people to fall asleep during their dental work. There are several different levels of sedation, from minimal to general anesthesia. At SoBe Dentist™ we offer oral conscious sedation.

Many of our patients experience an amnesiac effect from the sedation we use; this simply means they have no memory of their dental work. For many of our patients, that is a benefit of sedation dentistry.

Oral Conscious Sedation: This type of sedation requires you to get a ride to and from your dental appointment due to the effects. To receive oral conscious sedation, we will provide you with a few pills. You may have to take one before bed the night before your procedure to help you sleep; others may only need to take one right before the appointment.

Once the pill takes effect, you’ll feel relaxed and may possibly fall asleep while we do our dental work. Your dosage depends on many factors, such as your weight, current medications you’re taking, the length of time necessary for your procedure, and your medical history.

Why You Might Want Sedation Dentistry

Dental phobia or anxiety isn’t the only reason you might choose sedation dentistry. You may need it depending on the type of treatment you’re receiving, such as dental implants, a lengthy cosmetic procedure, or gum disease treatment.
