Tooth Extraction Procedure

Before we go ahead and extract a tooth, you will first have a consultation with Dr. Mantovani or Dr. Escoto. During your consultation, we will take x-rays and provide you with an exam to determine if an extraction is the best treatment option. If it’s not, we will first discuss your other options with you. We offer a wide range of restorative treatments that can help restore your tooth to health and prevent the need for an extraction. If you decide that extraction is best for you, we will proceed with the procedure.

If you’re prone to dental anxiety or want to feel more comfortable during your procedure, we will recommend sedation dentistry for the extraction. Sedation dentistry involves taking a pill before your procedure. The pill helps you feel completely relaxed the entire time. Once the effects take place, we will numb up your mouth so you don’t feel a thing. If the tooth is impacted, we will need to cut a flap in your gums to access the tooth. In some cases, we’re able to wiggle the tooth out of the gums. If bone or tissue on top of the tooth, we will need to cut through it to extract the tooth. Lastly, if the tooth is too stubborn to remove with the previous methods, we will need to break the tooth and extract it in pieces.
After we remove the tooth from the socket, we will clean the area and suture the flap back in place. We will then apply gauze to the area to stop the bleeding.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Another type of tooth extraction that most people experience in their lifetime are wisdom tooth extractions. The wisdom teeth, or the third set of molars, usually start erupting in people’s late teens or twenties. In most cases, it’s necessary to remove these teeth because there is not enough room in the mouth, the teeth are misaligned, or they’re impacted. Someone rarely has enough room in their mouth and the teeth grow in straight. If you allow the teeth to grow in without extracting them, they may cause your other teeth to become crowded.

If you visit our dental office for routine dental exams and cleanings, we will tell you when we notice your wisdom teeth starting to make an appearance. We will let you know when the time is right to extract them if necessary. If you’re experiencing any pain from wisdom teeth, please don’t hesitate to visit us for a consultation for extraction as soon as possible.
