How to Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery

Before receiving dental implants surgery in Miami Beach, there are a few ways to prepare yourself. First, we recommend that patients place a few soft ice packs in their freezer so that when they return from surgery they have ice ready to apply to the swelling. We also recommend having ibuprofen at home to help with the pain and a supply of soft foods to make eating easier. You should also plan to take a few days off of work because it’s unlikely you will feel up for work after surgery. We also provide our patients with antibiotics to take after surgery to prevent infection. Make sure you pick these up before your surgery so you don’t have to stress about them afterward.

What to Eat After Surgery

After your dental implants surgery, we highly recommend eating only soft foods that are not too hot or too cold. Consider food items such as soft cheese, yogurt, warm soup, smoothies, or mashed potatoes. Without eating a soft diet, you can irritate the gums which can interfere with the healing process after surgery. As you heal, start to slowly add regular foods back into your diet. It’s best to avoid any foods that are too sharp, hard, or difficult to chew. Making these simple adjustments during the healing time will help you eat without harming your gums.

Can Anything Slow the Dental Implants Recovery Process?

Yes, if you have diabetes with uncontrolled blood sugar, it might be more difficult for your body to heal after surgery. If you’ve recently had a diabetic episode, let us know so we can plan your surgery accordingly to provide you with the best results possible.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene After Surgery

It’s essential to maintain good oral hygiene after receiving dental implants to ensure their success. However, for the first 24 hours after dental implant surgery, we do not recommend brushing your teeth. After you reach the 24-hour threshold though, feel free to gently resume tooth brushing. Try to avoid brushing near the implant surgery sites. It’s also beneficial to rinse your mouth with salt water to prevent infection. During the first 14 days following surgery, do not use hydrogen peroxide or mouth wash rinses. After your dental implants heal, make sure to keep up with good oral hygiene to prevent gum disease and your implants from failing.
